On July 1, 2019, Mr. Darel Hansen became the 15th Principal at Riverside Poly High School. Established in 1887, Riverside Poly High School is the oldest high school in Riverside, California, a residential suburban community located 55 miles east of Los Angeles. The school has an enrollment exceeding 2500 students in grades 9-12.
Prior to coming to Poly, Mr. Hansen served as the Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources for the Hemet Unified School District. However, his passion for working with students and being on a high school campus drove him back to a Principal position. He began his career in the Jurupa Unified School District serving as a Custodian and Campus Supervisor. Upon completion of his degree and teaching credential, he moved on to the Alvord Unified School District as an English and Physical Education teacher at La Sierra High School. He also worked as the school’s Head Football Coach and Athletic Director.
Mr. Hansen eventually moved over to the Riverside Unified School District where he worked as an Assistant Principal at Riverside Poly and Martin Luther King High School, Principal at Martin Luther King High School, Director of Secondary Education and Director of Human Resources for the Riverside Unified School District.
Mr. Hansen has been a resident of Riverside since 1969. He graduated from Norte Vista High School, holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from California State University, San Bernardino and a Masters Degree in Cross Cultural Education and Administration from National University. Mr. Hansen and his wife Kim have four daughters - Devan, Sydney, Morgan and Miley.

Riverside Unified School District Appoints New Superintendent
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Board of Education is pleased to announce the selection of Dr. Sonia Llamas as the next Superintendent of the Riverside Unified School District. Tonight, at its June 26 meeting, the Riverside Unified Board of Education approved the appointment of Dr. Llamas. Her first day as Superintendent will be July 14.
Dr. Llamas brings a wealth of experience to Riverside Unified, having served as Chief Academic Officer and Associate Superintendent of Educational and Student Services at the Orange County Department of Education. She has also held leadership positions in Santa Ana Unified, Los Angeles Unified, and Pasadena Unified, where she helped design, implement, and scale student success systems rooted in community engagement, holistic student wellbeing and academic excellence.
Riverside Unified Board President Brent Lee took the lead in the search for a new superintendent and welcomed Dr. Llamas on behalf of his fellow Board members. “The Board is committed to high standards for our students’ education, and we believe Dr. Llamas’ expertise, experience, advocacy, and empathy make her well-suited as our next leader. Our community spoke clearly about the need for a dynamic, visionary administrator and we believe we have found that in Dr. Llamas.”
